I practiced for the first time 5 years ago, practiced on and off, but was lukewarm about yoga.  Then 3 years ago my father became really ill and I tried yoga again as a way to try to relax and was hooked!!!

 

How did you find your way onto your mat?

At first I was looking for a way to deepen and slow down my breathing when I was running.....yoga helped, but I found deep breathing to be only one of the MANY benefits!!!

 

How often do you practice?

I usually practice 4 times a week, I aim for 5, but sometimes life and work get in the way!

 

What is your favorite posture?

I love twists!  I feel like not only do I stretch and detox, but I can always find a way to breathe into the twist and get deeper!

 

What have you learned on your yogic journey?

I have learned that although I sometimes feel selfish taking the time to practice, practicing yoga is as crucial for me as my morning coffee!  Practicing yoga has been one of the constants that has brought me some peace and calm through stress and sadness of losing my father. I now try to see my practice as a way to set an example for my children as a healthy coping strategy and self care routine.

 

What advice would you share with someone who is new to yoga?

I advise someone new to tell the teacher you're new, Mantra's teachers are incredibly kind and helpful and encouraging! Keep coming and believe that no one is watching!!!

 

What benefits have you received from practicing yoga?

I have felt physical benefits from yoga like flexibility and toning but more important have been the mental benefits. Yoga has really helped me to feel more centered and calm during stressful and upsetting times. It has also helped me to slow down and really appreciate the happy times and the beauty around in the world.

 

What's your favorite thing about practicing at Mantra Yoga?

I love Mantra because everyone is so lovely and friendly. I think the teachers and students are very welcoming and encouraging. I love the way the teachers work to move each student forward individually while maintaining a consistent pace throughout the class. I look forward to my time on my mat at Mantra and feel grateful to have such a wonderful studio so close to home!!

Yogi Of The Month: Tracy

How long have you been practicing?

I have dabbled in yoga here and there for about 10 years. I started doing weekends in Kripalu 3 years ago. However, it wasn't until I moved to Danvers last October before I took up a regular more consistent practice of yoga. Mantra offers such a variety and so many options! Since I started coming to Mantra I have felt that I have the support I need to develop an ongoing versatile yoga practice.

How did you find your way onto your mat?

I have always been drawn to the ancient wisdom of Rumi, Taoism and Buddhism with practices of mindfulness and a deep knowing that we are all connected. Having had a difficult childhood I found my way to the mat because it grounded me and stopped all the negative trauma stories I had about myself for at least the time I was on the mat. Being a therapist, I find that peoples stories can really get the best of us all sometimes and yoga allows for us to drop that and be present to everything in connection to the breath.

How often do you practice?

I practice at least 5 times a week in class, but I mix it up a lot. I love all of the teachers and many styles of yoga. Deana nourishes my soul. Danielle pushes me to new physical realms. Marlena challenges what I think I know and has the best yoga nidra. Carianne helps me with my physical pain and helps me stretch my neck and shoulders. Cindy has a great yin yoga class. I really get so much from each different class and style of the instructor!

What is your favorite posture?

Wild thing of course! It stretches me and opens me while also allowing me to be strong and beautiful. So much to love about it. I also anything that allows me to stretch.

What have you learned on your yogic journey?

So much! Yoga has taught me about strength, resilience, mindfulness, play, love. It has taught me that nothing is that serious, nothing is permanent, everything is always changing and the suffering comes when I cling to it having to be a certain way. It has taught me that everything is a practice. To be easy on myself and others. It has taught me about my patterns and thoughts and how they effect my body and soul. It encompasses all and I still have so much more to learn!

What advice would you share with someone who is new to yoga?

Yoga is a practice just like life. Strength, perseverance, compassion and self love is all it takes to succeed. Be easy on yourself and remember (as Deana always says) 95% is just showing up. Laugh at yourself, it's not that serious.

What benefits have you received from practicing yoga?

Yoga is my self-care and it grounds me. I come in and hit the mat and my mind is racing. By the end of the class I am cleared and ready to take on so much more. I am becoming stronger and teaching my mind, body, soul ancient lessons that shift my way of being in this world and my practice of self-love. I am learning how to love myself, free my inner child, connect to my roots, and connect to my larger purpose. I see the ebb and flow of life. I've learned to be more gentle, have more fun, and just trust whatever comes my way without so much thought or significance. I have learned how to be present and breathe and let it all be.

What's your favorite thing about practicing at Mantra Yoga?

The variety, the teachers, the many different times, the community, the knowledge and kindness of everyone that works there, the workshops, the reasonable prices, the love. I love it all <3

How long have you been practicing?

I first tried yoga around 2000/2001, and I started practicing regularly about 6 years ago."

How did you find your way onto your mat? 

My friend Meagan took me to my first class at the YMCA near Northeastern. For a while, I wasn't practicing regularly, but I would go back to yoga when I felt I needed to slow down or recover from an injury. Then, around the time my daughter was born, I was ready for a regular practice. The idea that a form of exercise could be energizing and alleviate physical pain was appealing to me because I was afraid that parenting would have the opposite effect. Once I opened up to getting more out of yoga, yoga really stepped up and it's been a great ride ever since. How often do you practice?

These days, I try to get to class three times a week, and I practice at home whenever I can. What is your favorite posture?

My favorite posture at the moment is Malasana. It really helps open up my hips and I like being able to squat down low when I'm playing dolls with my daughter or wrestling something away from one of my dogs. What have you learned on your yogic journey?

I've learned that I am not my mind. I used to think that the experience of the mind was the only one I had to pay attention to, but through yoga, I've learned that so many parts of my body have their own way of responding to life and that cultivating an awareness of those responses can really open things up. What advice would you share with someone who is new to yoga?

I can share a lesson I still struggle with: the times when your mind is telling you to push harder may be the times when you're best served by easing up and letting go. Most of the benefits I've received from yoga have been from letting go and catching myself in the places where I may be resistant to change. Fortunately for me, the mantra "Let it Go!" has been firmly drilled into my head by the magic makers at Disney. What benefits have you received from practicing yoga? 

One of the biggest benefits has been just knowing that there is a practice that can reshape your short term and long term perspective, so you never have to feel stuck in your circumstances. Whatever may seem uncomfortable or even painful today could be remembered later as a challenge that helped you grow. I hope it's allowed me to be less reactive and judgmental, because I've seen that things are going to happen, and yoga certainly doesn't eliminate them from happening, but - as long as you have your breath - it can help you find balance and composure amidst life's uncertainty. How long have you been practicing? 

I begin approximately 5 years ago.

How did you find your way onto your mat? 

Five years ago several friends started going to classes, and I decided to join them. I liked it, but found it hard to focus and breathe. I stuck with it, and within 6 to 8 months I began to settle in -calming my mind, feeling more relaxed and getting stronger. I practiced Hatha Yoga only for the next 2 years then needed something more. I tried a Vinyasa flow class, which was more challenging but so glad I did, I love it!

How often do you practice? 

I practice at least 2 to 3 times a week, would love to practice more.

What is your favorite posture? 

I love supportive legs up pose, I could stay there forever!  Then of course the final resting pose gives me such a happy feeling that I made my way to my mat again...

What have you learned on your yogic journey? 

My yoga practice has given me a better understanding of myself and others. It's allowed me to overcome difficult situations while just being on my mat and letting go of what no longer serves me...Focusing on being in the moment and how good that feels.

What advice would you share with someone who is new to yoga?

Don't give up; be patient with yourself, it's not all about the postures and flexibility. Have fun in your practice. It's just yoga.

What benefits have you received from practicing yoga? 

I've become more patient, focused and calmer with myself and others. The strength, flexibility and balance gained in my practice are amazing. Three years ago while at my yearly physical I discovered I gained a half inch in height and it's because of yoga. In fact, my doctor was quite surprised given my age at the time (60) when most people start shrinking. I feel great during and after every yoga practice, it's all good.

What's your favorite thing about practicing at Mantra Yoga? 

I love all of the instructors; I take away something different from each one every time I attend class. The class times and variety of classes fits perfectly in my daily schedule. I always recommend Mantra Yoga studio to anyone looking to practice!

Mantra Yoga Of The Month: Michele Thompson

  • How long have you been practicing? I started practicing yoga almost three years ago....there were intermittent classes before, but nothing on a regular basis.
  • How did you find your way onto your mat? I had moved back to Danvers and was going through a very difficult time in my life....and lo and behold....not 100 yards away popped up this yoga studio....it only made sense to try it out...and here I am today...still loving it!!
  • How often do you practice? My goal is to practice 4 times a week....sadly, that doesn't happen as often as I'd like....but it's about acceptance, not just of others but of yourself, right??
  • What is your favorite posture? I have two favorite postures...first, Warrior Two....I feel so strong and focused in this pose...it always gives me a mental boost....second would be crow...any and all of them, liberating to me.
  • What have you learned on your yogic journey? I've learned through yoga about self love, self acceptance and a boatload about gratitude....seriously, in most cases, take a look around and realize you are truly blessed.
  • What advice would you share with someone who is new to yoga? For the beginner, I would say, practice like no one is watching, because if the rest of them are doing it right, no one is!!!  It's a journey you are on by yourself....the best and biggest no judgment zone I've ever known.
  • What benefits have you received from practicing yoga? Yoga has brought so many benefits to my life.  I'm more flexible, leaner, stronger (and this comes from a former bodybuilder).  Mentally the benefits are immeasurable....focus, peace, confidence and it goes on...
  • What's your favorite thing about practicing at Mantra Yoga? The community at Mantra has always been so welcoming and kind...many times have I been brought to tears at some point throughout a class, and no judgment only support...I can't say it enough...Mantra Yoga is incredible, and I tell anyone who will listen about the benefits!!

Yogi Of The Month: Marlene Aguire

  • How long have you been practicing?I began attending Mantra Yoga from the beginning when Marlena opened her doors at High St, but I have been practicing yoga since 2002 when my family lived in Indonesia.
  • How did you find your way onto your mat? When I lived in Indonesia I had some friends who attended yoga classes so I decided to join them and I enjoyed it from the beginning. How often do you practice? I try to practice four to five times a week if it does not conflict with my work schedule.
  • What is your favorite posture? My favorite posture is the Twist because I can feel my abdomen getting stronger the more I do it.
  • What have you learned on your yogic journey? Patience
  • What advice would you share with someone who is new to yoga? My advice to the newcomer is to be patient and not to be discouraged when you are unable to do a certain posture. When it is the right time it will come to you.
  • What benefits have you received from practicing yoga? My body has become stronger, and my muscles have become firmer. I have also learned how to relax.
  • What's your favorite thing about practicing at Mantra Yoga? Sound mind and sound body
