Yogi Of The Month

How long have you been practicing? I have been practicing Yoga at Mantra for a little over 2 years. Prior to finding Mantra, I practiced yoga at home guided by a DVD.

How did you find your way onto your mat? I was looking for something to add to my life that would balance out my running...both my physical "exercise" running, and my tendency to stack my life so full that I was constantly running. I had encouraged a friend to take the beginners series offered a little over two years ago. Shortly after the first class, I had a fall while running which caused significant facial and dental injuries. After taking a little time off to allow my wounds to heal, I returned to yoga and found the peace and strength I needed to emotionally heal.

How often do you practice? It depends on the week! I try to get at least 3 classes a week.

What is your favorite posture? It is not toes pose! Honestly, it is hard to pick just one; I have several poses that I love for different reasons. I love servant's pose because it is strong and graceful. I love mermaid and dancer's pose because they are just beyond my reach and they keep me humble and striving. I love grasshopper and 8 angle pose because they are both pretty fierce.

What have you learned on your yogic journey? There are three phrases that I learned in yoga that I say to myself many times a week...sometimes many times a day. Don't go where you can't breathe....Stay for the exhale...and take up all the space on your mat. I find that I repeat these phrases to myself when I am facing challenges that test my strength, my grace, my humility, or my stamina!

What advice would you share with someone who is new to yoga? Take a variety of classes with a variety of instructors...when I was new I had to push myself out of the comfort zone I created with my favorite instructors. Every instructor has a different gift to add to your practice. Be kind to yourself. Don't compare yourself to anyone else...you are right where you need to be in each pose.

What benefits have you received from practicing yoga? Yoga, specifically a few chatarangas, helped me love my arms and appreciate a good sleeveless shirt in the summer! I have also become more mindful of my breath and the power my breathing has on my ability to change my mood and attitude.

What's your favorite thing about practicing at Mantra Yoga? My favorite things about practicing at Mantra Yoga are the instructors! Each instructor brings a unique and beautiful gift to my practice. I appreciate the many types of classes that are offered. If I want to feel strong and fierce, there is a class for that...if I need to feel loved and taken care of, there is a class for that....If I need to take time to find reflective peace, there is a class for that!
